LUMI-MORPH
PROJECT OVERVIEW
LUMI-MORPH is a lighting solution that provides unparalleled adaptability for your various lighting needs. It diffuses the light source with its layered fin construction and includes a mount that houses a standard light bulb.

QUADRANT ANALYSIS
For research I created a mood board which I then organized into a quadrant analysis. Through this I realized that I preferred layered, smoother and more geometric forms.
Ideation
INITIAL SKETCHES
With the my inspiration coming from layered forms, I sketched three ideas that incorporated this aesthetic, while also keeping in mind the constraints of the material and the manufacturing process. After critique, I decided to proceed with Concept #1 because of the unique morphing functionality.
Iteration
INITIAL PROTOTYPING
With my initial prototyping, I used cardboard to dial in the dimensions of the lamp, as well as how I wanted the sliding mechanism to work. With this prototype I began to understand just how important tolerances were when designing something with a mechanical function.
PROTOTYPE ITERATIONS + PROCESS
With the knowledge I gained from the initial cardboard prototype, I started the iterating process using laser cut MDF. With Adobe Illustrator, I created the laser cutting pattern based on my cardboard prototype. After each test, I would assemble it and decide what could be changed.
The main problem was the twisting that would occur between the layers as my tolerances were a few millimeters off. However with multiple stages of prototyping, I was able to get the desired result.
FINAL DESIGN
Using everything I learned from the prototypes, I adjusted the tolerances to achieve a smooth sliding motion. Using the plywood cut with the flat pack I made in Illustrator and the light fixture, I assembled the lamp so it could transform from a standing desk lamp to a hanging lamp.
